Manchester City Team News
Manchester City enter Sunday’s clash in blazing form. Guardiola’s side have played twice since their 2-0 win over Arsenal in the EFL Cup Final back in March, facing tough opposition in both fixtures – an FA Cup tie against Liverpool followed by a Premier League meeting with Chelsea last weekend. City won both matches convincingly, 4-0 and 3-0 respectively.
Nico O’Reilly – who scored both goals in the League Cup Final – was substituted in the 64th minute at Stamford Bridge last weekend, raising concerns. However, according to Paul Hirst of The Times, O’Reilly participated in a light recovery session on Monday. Given his involvement in training, the injury is not expected to be serious, though a formal update is still pending.
City currently sit six points behind Arsenal in the table with a game in hand. With this effectively a six-pointer, the title race remains very much alive.
Arsenal Team News
Arsenal’s form has dipped since the turn of the year, with performances declining in recent weeks. The Gunners were on a 14-match unbeaten run before City ended it in the EFL Cup Final. Following that defeat, Arsenal were eliminated from another cup competition, losing 2-1 to Championship side Southampton.
In the UEFA Champions League, Arsenal faced Sporting CP and secured a 1-0 away win thanks to a 90th-minute goal from Kai Havertz. However, domestic struggles continued, as they fell 2-1 at home to Bournemouth last weekend – prompting audible frustration from supporters at the Emirates Stadium.
On Wednesday, Arsenal advanced to the Champions League semi-finals after a 0-0 draw (1-0 aggregate) against Sporting. However, injuries worsened, with Noni Madueke forced off – though he did leave the pitch under his own power.
Missing in midweek were Jurrien Timber, Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, and Riccardo Calafiori; all of whom remain day-to-day and questionable for Sunday.
Timber’s return appears unlikely, particularly after Mosquera started at right-back midweek, allowing Ben White to rest ahead of this crucial fixture.

Man City vs Arsenal Predicted Lineups

Manchester City Lineup Notes:
Pep Guardiola’s starting XI remained unchanged between matches against Liverpool and Chelsea, and that trend is expected to continue here. With no European commitments, City have benefited from additional rest, including multiple days off training this week.
Nico O’Reilly went off against Chelsea with an apparent hamstring injury, however, the injury is believed to be minor and I expect O’Reilly who is such a crucial part of Pep’s system to be fit to start come Sunday.

Arsenal Lineup Notes:
Arsenal are navigating a difficult injury situation involving several key players, while others – such as Piero Hincapié and Declan Rice – are playing through knocks.
Calafiori may be available, but even if fit, Hincapié is expected to retain his place. On the right side, Ben White is likely to return after being rested midweek, replacing Mosquera.
Bukayo Saka’s return date remains unclear, and Arteta is unlikely to reveal much regarding player fitness ahead of kickoff. With uncertainty surrounding both Saka and Madueke, Max Dowman could be called upon, though Arteta may instead prefer experience, with Eberechi Eze a strong candidate to start on the right.
Martin Ødegaard continues to deal with knee discomfort. If unavailable, Eze could fill the role, or Kai Havertz may step into the advanced midfield position behind Viktor Gyökeres, as he has done previously this season.
Gabriel Martinelli’s recent performances have been underwhelming, and Leandro Trossard could start as a tactical decision with Trossard being the better option to invert and drop into spaces during build-up and progression phases.

Manchester City vs Arsenal Preview
The gravity and importance of this match in relation to the Premier League title race is undeniable.
Many are already writing Arsenal off due to their recent form and Manchester City’s resurgence. However, regardless of opinion, all eyes will be on the Etihad for this title-defining clash.
Manchester City’s Press vs Arsenal’s Build-Up
Out of possession, Manchester City will be fluid between their pressing shape and a 4-2-3-1 defensive structure.
When pressing high, City will likely operate in a 4-2-4 shape, similar to their approach in the EFL Cup Final, where it proved highly effective.

Arsenal’s base shape is a 4-2-3-1 when building from the back.

When operating in this 4-2-4 high pressing shape, Doku and Semenyo will look to position themselves more narrow, looking to congest the central areas of the pitch and box in Arsenal’s holding midfielders of Rice and Zubimendi.

City’s front line will not press aggressively but instead use shadow cover to block passing lanes into midfield, forcing Arsenal into difficult decisions during build-up. This exact pressing structure and tactic is what saw City become so dominant in the EFL Cup final in March. Arsenal have struggled to progress the ball up the pitch and this tactic will likely be deployed once again by Pep.
Mikel Arteta will have to be creative in his players’ positional rotations and movement in their build-up if they are to successfully progress the ball through the thirds.
The tactical board below shows an example of a positional rotation that Arsenal could deploy to free up space behind City’s back line while also creating multiple options for passing out from the back and progressing the ball down the pitch.

Arsenal’s right winger (Eze) could look to invert in from the outside lane and drop between Silva and Doku, looking to drag City’s Bernardo Silva out of the central spaces to mark him. Along with Silva potentially being dragged out of position, City’s right back (O’Reilly) could be dragged higher up the pitch.
On the left, Leandro Trossard could mirror this movement, drawing Rodri out of position, while Hincapié advances down the flank. Declan Rice may drop into the back line to cover, forcing City’s wide players to hold their positions and potentially opening space centrally.
If Rodri and Bernardo Silva are drawn out, one of City’s central defenders may be forced to step up to mark Kai Havertz – creating space behind the back line and opening opportunities for line-breaking passes from Zubimendi.
If City instead remain zonal, Arsenal can exploit numerical advantages in wide areas.
Arsenal’s Issues in the Build-Up
Arsenal have struggled to build out from the back in recent weeks, as seen across multiple fixtures since the EFL Cup Final. Misplaced passes, failed line-breaking attempts, and increased turnovers in their own half have highlighted vulnerability in their build-up.
A major issue has been the hesitation of Martín Zubimendi and David Raya to play forward passes. William Saliba and Gabriel are an excellent defensive pairing but are not consistently effective at progressing the ball through lines.
Zubimendi, despite earning Player of the Match honors in midweek, has recently been reluctant to play progressive passes, often recycling possession back to the defensive line – placing pressure on deeper players and increasing the likelihood of turnovers.
Manchester City should look to allow Arsenal to come to them – much like they did in their previous meeting. City should look to initiate the press aggressively when Arsenal rotate the ball back to their central pairing or goalkeeper, pinning Arsenal’s centre backs deep and forcing them to either go long or try to pick out a pass into the midfield under immense pressure.
If City can win the ball high up the pitch with attackers already in forward positions, it could spell trouble for the Gunners.
Where City Can Find Success in Attack
Shift Arsenal’s Back Line Out of Position
When going forward in attack, positional rotations between Semenyo and Cherki have been evident in recent matches and should continue on Sunday. Semenyo operates from the right wing in large, however, at times he looks to move in more centrally as a secondary striker to Haaland. Vacating the right wing allows for Cherki to rotate to a wider position where he can look to take a defender on 1-v-1 or put crosses into the box.
Arsenal’s left back will be marking Semenyo tightly – Semenyo moving centrally could pull Arsenal’s fullback in from the outside lane and force Gabriel to rotate with Cherki out from the central space.
If Arsenal’s back line do look to rotate defensively, their rotations will have to be synchronized and made quickly so as to not allow for City’s attackers to find the ball with time and space.

Force Zubimendi to Mark O’Reilly
This was the tactical move by Pep that won Manchester City the EFL Cup final. Zubimendi, who is a very strong player defensively and positionally, is not physically strong or fast enough to deal with Nico O’Reilly when he arrives late into the attack.
O’Reilly often inverts in central midfield from his fullback position when Manchester City have prolonged possession in the opposition’s half. O’Reilly often makes late runs into the box when the ball is played wide for City. O’Reilly should run at Zubimendi in attack, forcing the much smaller man to track his run while Arsenal’s stronger central defenders are tied up with City’s attackers. O’Reilly’s aerial presence could once again pay dividends if the right ball is put into the area when he makes his run.
Take Advantage of Semenyo’s Pace
Antoine Semenyo offers a direct outlet for Manchester City. Hincapié’s advanced positioning can leave space in behind, particularly during transitions.
Even when recovery runs are made, the physical toll can create opportunities for Semenyo to exploit.
Suffocate Arsenal’s Defensive Shape
City should look to slow the pace and tempo of the match down at points when they have possession. Rotating and circulating the ball around, moving Arsenal from side to side, and pinning their shape deep in their own half for long stretches.
Arsenal’s fixture list has been grueling with matches coming multiple times per week. The fatigue of the Arsenal players may prove to be a substantial talking point for this match. On top of the physical fatigue that Arsenal’s squad are dealing with, the mental fatigue could be even stronger.
Media outlets, fans both online as well as in the stadium, and neutral fans around the world have been discussing Arsenal’s recent woes for weeks now with the word “bottle” being thrown around like confetti. The psychological effects that the Arsenal squad are likely going through are continuing to grow with each match they play. City’s consistent possession and pressure in attack can wear the Gunners down mentally and slowly leak any confidence that the Arsenal players do have.
Where Arsenal Can Find Success in Attack
Utilize Kai Havertz to Progress the Ball
Kai Havertz could play in behind Gyökeres if the Swede does make the start up top and that could prove to work well. Havertz’s ability to hold up play as well as receive the ball as a target man and distribute it forward is significant.
Arteta’s men have been struggling to build out from the back – Kai Havertz as a target man when going long or as an attacking midfielder finding space between the lines to receive could be the solution. Havertz has looked in good form when coming off the bench for Arsenal as of late and he could find himself in Arteta’s starting lineup. Havertz should be utilized in ball progression and in attack to link the midfield with the attacking line and provide flick ons and good distribution behind the Manchester City back line.
Force Gyökeres onto Khusanov
Viktor Gyökeres could prove to be vital for Arsenal in a different way than scoring goals in this match. Gyökeres could aim to take up his space in the left-to-central space on the pitch, forcing Khusanov to be his marker.
Khusanov has shown his quality this season, however, the Uzbekistan international did have some issues dealing with Gyökeres in their previous meeting in March in the first half, picking up a caution for a poor challenge on the Swede. Viktor Gyökeres should look to pull Khusanov wider, battling him with his strength and his speed, forcing Khusanov to mark him tightly.

Gaps in Manchester City’s back line could be made, allowing for underlapping runs from the winger and central runs from their attacking midfielder to be exploited.

Gyökeres’ off the ball movement will need to be intentional and focused on pulling City defenders out of position.
Capitalize on Set Pieces
Arsenal’s strongest point all season long has been their ability on set pieces. They are relentless on set pieces and should lean into that facet of their game on Sunday. Playing for corners when wingers are outnumbered or too deep in City’s half to pick a pass out could prove vital. Arsenal must make the absolute most of their set piece attempts on Sunday if they want to put the pressure on City.
Manchester City vs Arsenal Prediction
Manchester City come into this match in stronger form, with fewer injury concerns and the advantage of rest, while Arsenal are dealing with injuries, fatigue, and mounting pressure.
I am expecting a cagey start to this match from both sides while Arsenal find their feet at the Etihad and Manchester City grow into the game, looking to avoid any early mistakes.
A major factor in this match will be the injuries to Arsenal. It is unclear who will be available for Sunday’s match yet and the Arsenal lineup could look one of many different variations.
Due to the injuries, the packed fixture list, and the pressure of the moment, many people are writing Arsenal off. However, realistically, Arteta’s side really just need to keep City at arms length in this match. I expect for risks to be limited from the Arsenal side and for defensive shape and stability to be priority number one for Mikel Arteta and his squad.
Prediction: 1-1 Draw
