Leeds head into Sunday’s match on the back of two straight wins over Nottingham Forest in two different competitions. The Whites opened their Premier League campaign with a dramatic 1-0 win away at Forest, settled by an 88th-minute Anton Stach free-kick. Four days later, they beat Forest again, this time 2-0, to knock them out of the EFL Cup.

Brentford also arrive off the back of two consecutive wins to open their competitive season. The Bees put in a dominant display to beat Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham 3-0 in their Premier League opener, before following it up with a 6-1 thrashing of Championship side Birmingham City in the EFL Cup.
There’s also transfer business to note: young full-back El Hadji Malick Diouf looks set to sign for Brentford from West Ham, returning to the Premier League after the Hammers’ relegation last season. Diouf is the latest addition as Brentford continue to strengthen their squad, with a fee of around £36 million plus add-ons reportedly agreed, pending a medical.

I expect Daniel Farke to name the same starting XI that won Leeds’ opening Premier League fixture. He knows his best team, and after a solid performance away at Forest, there’s little reason to change things now. Ampadu offers more defensive structure than Tanaka in midfield, while Harry Wilson should get another chance on the right wing.
Brentford Lineup Notes
For Brentford, expect one change. Jaidon Anthony, who arrived from Burnley over the summer, has staked his claim for a starting spot after registering a hat-trick of assists against Birmingham City in midweek. That puts Kevin Schade’s usual starting spot in some jeopardy.

How Leeds United Will Setup
Leeds in Possession
Daniel Farke will set his Leeds side up in his 3-4-3 preferred formation.
Leeds’ 3-4-3 is an attacking, fluid shape. In the build-up and progression phases, they stretch the pitch with their wing-backs pushing high and wide, which allows their wingers to invert into more central positions. When Aaronson and Wilson tuck inside and drop into pockets of space, they form a vertically layered, trapezoid-shaped midfield around the double pivot of Ampadu and Stach.
That central structure also puts Aaronson and Wilson in good positions to collect knock-downs from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who plays as a target man for the Whites and is comfortable receiving the ball both at his feet and in the air.
On the right, centre-back Rodon shifts into wider areas to free up Bogle to push high and forward down the outside. On the left, wing-back James Justin looks to receive the ball in wide areas, stretching the opposition while Leeds keep strong numbers centrally.
As Leeds progress further up the pitch, their shape holds its width: Bogle pushes high up the right, while Wilson sits inverted and slightly deeper at times, effectively playing as a right-sided No. 10 and allowing Bogle to drift more central. On the other side, Aaronson operates as an inverted winger while Justin bombs forward down the left.
This season and in pre-season, Rodon has also been given license to push forward from central defence, whether arriving late in the box or driving the ball forward himself to break the opposition’s first line. The end result is a wide, attacking 3-2-5 shape, with three dangerous central players and Calvert-Lewin providing an aerial outlet in the box.
The trade-off is vulnerability on the counter. Leeds have already shown at times this season that when possession is lost, thin numbers in their rest defence can leave them exposed to quick transitions.
Leeds Out of Possession
The Press
With plenty of bodies committed defensively, Leeds are able to man-mark Brentford’s attacking players as they press. Their front three don’t press aggressively; instead, they set the pace and sit off, waiting for the right moment to engage.
While the front three approach with caution, the rest of the side marks tightly man-for-man, with the back five in particular sticking close to their opponents and refusing to concede space. The aim is to force turnovers Leeds can then exploit — and because the front three aren’t tied to specific markers, they’re often well placed in space the moment possession is won back.
Leeds United’s Defensive Setup
Leeds typically defend in a back five, forming a 5-2-3 shape. Against Brentford, though, expect something closer to a 5-4-1, designed to deal with Brentford’s attacking full-backs.
The extra body at the back allows Leeds’ defenders to step out and man-mark opponents who drift into space without leaving gaps in behind. In the 5-4-1 shape Farke is likely to use, the wingers will be tasked with tracking Kayode and Lewis-Potter whenever they push forward for Brentford.
Brentford in Possession
On paper, Bentford line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation.
Brentford play at a high tempo when progressing the ball, often going long to target man Igor Thiago — not unlike Leeds’ use of Calvert-Lewin. Thiago’s physical presence lets him win and hold up long balls well, letting Brentford skip past lengthy build-up and get into attacking areas quickly.
Rotation is central to how Brentford function. Both midfield pivots are comfortable dropping into the back line, which frees the full-backs to push forward: Kayode gets high and wide, allowing Ouattara to tuck into more central attacking areas, while Lewis-Potter roams freely across the pitch, both vertically and horizontally.
Brentford like to attack with width, looking to exploit wide areas in the build-up and whip crosses into the box in the final third.
As they advance, their shape shifts into an attacking 3-2-5.
Brentford’s Defensive Setup
Out of possession, Brentford’s 4-4-2 can leave them a little narrow. To counter that, any of the four midfielders can drop into the back line to help stretch it horizontally.
Expect Brentford to actively drop supporting players into their back line to help their full-backs match up against Leeds’ advanced wing-backs.
Leeds vs Brentford Prediction
This should be a tactical contest, with the best chances likely to come in transition, given both sides’ threat on the counter. Set pieces could also play a role, with both teams carrying some danger from dead-ball situations.
Overall, I expect Brentford to leave Elland Road with all three points. They carry more venom in transition, and that should be compounded by Leeds’ tendency to commit numbers forward, leaving space in behind.
Leeds’ defenders like to mark tightly man-for-man, cutting off passing options in the process. The question is whether that holds up against Brentford’s rotations. Fast, clean rotations should make Leeds’ markers hard to pin down, opening space for Brentford’s attackers across the pitch. Even if Leeds manage to track the rotations, the alternative works in Brentford’s favor too — being dragged out of shape to follow the movement could be just as costly, opening the door for the Bees to find the net.
