Early Life and Career

Born in Plzeň, Czechoslovakia (now Czechia), Petr Čech joined the youth academy of local club Škoda Plzeň (later known as Viktoria Plzeň) at the age of seven. While he initially joined as a striker, Čech switched to goalkeeper at age ten following a leg injury.
Čech joined Czech First League side Chmel Blšany in June 1999 and made his professional debut just four months later at only seventeen years old.
Following the 2000/2001 season, Čech transferred to Sparta Prague on a five-and-a-half-year contract. Over a ten-game stretch from August to November 2001, Čech set a Czech First League clean sheet record of 903 minutes without conceding a goal.
His success with Sparta Prague and the Czech national team attracted the attention of several English clubs. A potential move to Arsenal in the summer of 2002 fell through due to difficulties obtaining a work permit. Ultimately, Čech moved to French side Rennes, where he remained until the summer of 2004.
In the summer of 2004, Čech was selected for the Czech Republic squad at Euro 2004, having already established himself as the country’s first-choice goalkeeper. The Czech Republic reached the semi-finals before falling to hosts Greece, and Čech’s performances earned him a place in the tournament’s All-Star Squad.
Move to England
Immediately following Euro 2004, Čech completed his long-awaited move to England in July 2004 when he signed a five-year contract with Chelsea. The Blues purchased him for a fee of €13 million, making him the most expensive goalkeeper in the club’s history at the time.
His transition to the Premier League was seamless. Between December 2004 and March 2005, Čech kept a clean sheet for a league-record 1,025 consecutive minutes. Chelsea went on to win the Premier League that season, with Čech recording 24 clean sheets – a Premier League record that still stands today.
Following his first season in England, Čech won the first of four Premier League Golden Glove awards.
The following season, Čech appeared in 34 league matches and conceded only 20 goals as Chelsea secured a second consecutive Premier League title. He was also named Czech Footballer of the Year for 2005 – the first of nine times he would receive the honour during his career.
What Injury did Petr Cech Suffer?
On October 14, 2006, Čech was involved in a frightening collision with Reading midfielder Stephen Hunt. The goalkeeper remained unconscious for several minutes on the field before the referee called for medical assistance. Čech was eventually stretchered off and replaced for the remainder of the match.
Chelsea manager José Mourinho later criticized both the referee and medical staff for their delayed response after it was revealed that the incident had been life-threatening. Čech underwent surgery for a depressed skull fracture and had metal plates inserted into his skull to stabilize the injury.

Despite the severity of the injury, Čech returned to action just three months later in a match against Liverpool, wearing the now-iconic rugby-style protective helmet that he would continue to wear for the rest of his career.
In March 2007, Čech became the first goalkeeper since 2000 to win the Premier League Player of the Month award. Later that year, he became the first goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet over a full match at the new Wembley Stadium when Chelsea defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the FA Cup final.
The following season proved difficult for the Czech international due to injuries. A calf injury in November kept him out for a month, while an ankle injury in March 2008 caused him to miss another month of action. A training incident in April sidelined him for an additional two weeks before he returned on April 14, 2008.
Čech later appeared in his first UEFA Champions League final in May 2008, where Chelsea lost 6-5 on penalties to Manchester United.
Continued Success at Chelsea
Čech returned to form at the start of the 2008/2009 season, conceding just three goals in his first ten matches.
During the season, he reached several major Chelsea milestones, including 200 appearances and 100 Premier League clean sheets. Chelsea would also defeat Everton in the FA Cup final, adding another trophy to Čech’s collection.
The 2009/2010 season proved to be one of the most successful of his career. Chelsea won both the Premier League and FA Cup to secure a domestic double. In the FA Cup final, Čech saved a Portsmouth penalty shortly after halftime as Chelsea won 1-0.
His performances that season earned him his second Premier League Golden Glove award.
Čech continued his strong form in the 2010/2011 season, conceding just 33 goals in 38 Premier League matches while recording 15 clean sheets. Although Chelsea failed to win a trophy that year, Čech was named Chelsea Player of the Year.
Chelsea returned to winning ways in the 2011/2012 season with Čech once again playing a crucial role. Despite finishing sixth in the Premier League, the club won both the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League.
In the Champions League final, Čech made several crucial saves, including stopping a penalty in extra time. He was subsequently named the Fans’ Man of the Match.
The following season, Chelsea defeated Benfica in the Europa League final, giving Čech another European trophy.
During the 2013/2014 season, Čech produced another outstanding campaign. With 16 clean sheets in 34 matches and just 24 goals conceded, he shared the Premier League Golden Glove with Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny – the third time he had won the award.

Demotion to the Bench and Departure From Chelsea
Ahead of the 2014/2015 season, Čech lost his starting position to young goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. As a result, he appeared in only 16 matches across all competitions as Chelsea won the Premier League and EFL Cup to secure a domestic double.
These trophies would be Čech’s final honours with Chelsea, as he departed for Arsenal in the summer of 2015. Many Chelsea supporters were disappointed with the move, and some even went as far as sending threats against the goalkeeper and his family.
Arsenal Years and Premier League Records
Despite limited playing time during his final season at Chelsea, Čech showed little rust during his first season at Arsenal in 2015/2016.
In his first match with the club, he won the FA Community Shield as Arsenal defeated his former club Chelsea 1-0.
Čech recorded 16 clean sheets in 34 league matches as Arsenal finished runner-up to Leicester City. His performances earned him his fourth and final Premier League Golden Glove.
However, his form began to decline during the 2016/2017 season. Arsenal finished fifth in the league but reached the FA Cup final. Despite starting in the previous rounds, Čech was left out of the final as Arsenal defeated Chelsea 2-1.
Winning the FA Cup qualified Arsenal for the Community Shield, once again pitting Čech’s current club against his former team. Arsenal won the match on penalties, securing what would be Čech’s final trophy in England.
In March 2018, Čech became the first goalkeeper in Premier League history to record 200 clean sheets. He finished his career with 202 clean sheets in 443 Premier League matches. His clean sheet percentage of 46.7% remains the highest among Premier League goalkeepers with at least 50 clean sheets.
Čech began the 2018/2019 season as Arsenal’s starting goalkeeper but eventually lost his place to new signing Bernd Leno. In January 2019, he announced he would retire at the end of the season.
His final match came against his former club Chelsea in the Europa League final, which Arsenal lost 4-1.
Čech ended his career in England with 4 Premier League titles, 4 FA Community Shields, 3 FA Cups, 1 UEFA Europa League title, and 1 UEFA Champions League title. In 2023, he was inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame – one of only two goalkeepers to receive the honour.
Transition to Management
Immediately following his retirement, Čech returned to Chelsea as a technical and performance advisor.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he briefly registered with Chelsea’s youth squad as an emergency measure and even made a single appearance for the club’s U23 team.
Čech remained in his advisory role until departing the club in 2022.
Petr Čech’s Ice Hockey Career

Since retiring from professional football, Čech has pursued another passion: ice hockey.
While still working as an advisor at Chelsea, Čech began playing for the Guildford Phoenix, a club competing in the fourth tier of British ice hockey. This was not his first connection with the team, as he had trained with them since 2013 as a way to break up his football routine.
Čech’s love of hockey dates back to his childhood, when he idolized legendary Czech NHL goaltender Dominik Hašek. His hockey number, 39, matches the number Hašek wore throughout his professional career.
Despite his passion for the sport, Čech’s family could not afford the high costs of youth hockey equipment, which ultimately led him to focus on football instead.
Even without recent competitive experience, Čech was named Man of the Match in his first professional appearance with Guildford. After winning a treble with the club in 2022, he moved up to the third tier of British ice hockey.
During the 2023 offseason, Čech also participated in a charity match for the Belfast Giants of the Elite Ice Hockey League, the top tier of British ice hockey. He later joined the club on loan and made a single competitive appearance in relief.
Čech currently plays in the fourth tier of British ice hockey for the Haringey Huskies.
