Brighton Injuries & Team News

Brighton suffered a 2–0 defeat to Liverpool last weekend and will be eager to bounce back quickly despite the setback. The Seagulls return home knowing a strong response will be needed against an in-form Sunderland side.

Diego Gómez and Lewis Dunk will both miss Saturday’s match due to suspension, while Carlos Baleba will be unavailable for the foreseeable future as the midfielder departs to represent Cameroon at AFCON.

Injuries: Solly March, Stefános Tzimas, Adam Webster, Tom Watson, Lewis Dunk (suspended), Diego Gómez (suspended), Carlos Baleba (AFCON)

Sunderland Injuries & Team News

Sunderland come into this fixture on the back of a memorable 1–0 victory over Newcastle United in last weekend’s Tyne–Wear derby. A Nick Woltemade own goal handed the Black Cats an early lead, which they successfully defended for the remainder of the match.

However, Sunderland’s squad has been significantly depleted, with six players departing for AFCON. Noah Sadiki, Arthur Masuaku, Reinildo Mandava, Bertrand Traoré, Chemsdine Talbi, and Habib Diarra will all be unavailable for the foreseeable future.

Injuries: Ajibola Alese, Leo Hjelde, Luke O’Nien (suspended), Noah Sadiki (AFCON), Arthur Masuaku (AFCON), Reinildo Mandava (AFCON), Bertrand Traoré (AFCON), Chemsdine Talbi (AFCON), Habib Diarra (AFCON)

Predicted Starting Lineups

Brighton Lineup Notes

With Lewis Dunk suspended, Boscagli appears to be the most likely replacement in Brighton’s back line.

Carlos Baleba will also miss this match as he is away on AFCON duty, leaving Jack Hinshelwood and Yasin Ayari as the best-suited pairing in the centre of midfield for the Seagulls.

Sunderland Lineup Notes

As mentioned, Sunderland’s squad will be heavily depleted due to the number of players departing for AFCON. Trai Hume will likely replace Reinildo Mandava at fullback, while Chris Rigg will be hopeful of earning minutes alongside Granit Xhaka. Out wide, I would expect to see Romaine Mundle and the return of Simon Adingra in the starting lineup for the Black Cats.

Either Wilson Isidor or Brian Brobbey could start up top for Sunderland.

Match Preview

For Sunderland, their shape will likely be dependent on which formation manager Régis Le Bris feels best suits the players he has at his disposal for this match. The Black Cats will be hopeful of keeping things steady as they head into a difficult period with so many absences.

As for Brighton, the Seagulls will be looking to bounce back after a tough 2–0 defeat to Liverpool last weekend.

Sunderland’s New Look

Sunderland will be going through a drastic period of change over the next month, with so many key figures in their squad leaving for AFCON. When completing pre-match analysis for any side, situations like this make things extremely difficult, particularly when nearly half of a starting lineup is unavailable.

Questions arise such as: will Sunderland line up in a 4-2-3-1, or will they shift into a 5-3-2? Will they continue to build up through the wide lanes, or do the absences in the winger and fullback positions change that dynamic?

Sunderland will begin to answer these questions over their next two matches, and as a result, it may be more beneficial to focus attention on the side we have greater clarity on and a larger sample size for – Brighton.

Brighton’s Defensive Structure

Brighton typically defend with a narrow approach. However, they are capable of transitioning from a 4-2-3-1 into a 4-5-1, and more recently, even a 6-3-1. This adjustment has proven effective in providing additional defensive width for the Seagulls. [See images below]

When Brighton drop their wingers into the midfield line, their shape remains narrow, with the midfield now composed of five players. [See image below]

When facing sustained spells of opposition possession, Brighton have dropped their wingers even deeper, increasing their defensive responsibilities and forming a back line of six. Their central midfielders remain narrow, prioritizing the protection of central areas. [See image below]

The 6-3-1 low block provides Brighton with defensive width. This structure allows their wingers to press opposition fullbacks in wide areas while also occupying the outside lanes defensively. It also enables their fullbacks to shift wider for additional support when required. Maxim De Cuyper fits comfortably into this role, operating almost as a left wingback given his background as an attacking left-back. Yankuba Minteh, while less naturally suited to the role, shows a high defensive work rate and adapts well to the responsibility.

Sunderland have typically looked to build up and progress play through the outside lanes, creating wide overloads when possible. Against Brighton’s narrow midfield setup, the Black Cats would benefit from attacking the wide areas with numbers, creating overloads before looking to move the ball centrally.

Brighton’s Press vs Sunderland’s Build-Up

Sunderland prefer to build out from the back when possible, while Brighton deploy an aggressive pressing system. During Sunderland’s build-up phases, they often look to progress the ball through the outside channels, at times moving holding midfielders wider to allow their wingers to push higher up the pitch.

Brighton will likely focus their press on Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs. Roefs tends to look for safety when under pressure and will go long when uncertain. This presents Brighton with opportunities to regain possession in the middle third of the pitch.

Brighton’s Attack

In attack, Brighton look to involve their fullbacks, with right-back Mats Wieffer often inverting into midfield and Ferdi Kadıoğlu pushing high down the left, combining with Maxim De Cuyper. [See image below]

Brighton aim to attack with width, stretching the pitch horizontally and attempting to pull opponents out of centrally compact defensive shapes.

Danny Welbeck provides an excellent central passing option, often dropping into pockets of space in front of the opposition back line to receive the ball from wide areas.

Down the left side, Brighton look to create overloads by involving their left winger, left fullback, and left-sided holding midfielder. [See images below]

From this area, Brighton can work the ball centrally after drawing defensive numbers wide, or alternatively deliver dangerous balls into the box from the left wing.

On the right, Yankuba Minteh looks to cut inside and attack his defender 1-v-1, using his pace and dribbling ability to create chances.

Brighton are a highly possession-based side who look to complete line-breaking passes to access dangerous areas. This is where Welbeck excels, using his off-the-ball movement to drift into space and receive passes from deeper teammates.

Brighton’s Counter-Attack

Brighton possess a strong counter-attacking outlet in Minteh. Long balls played over the top and in behind the opposition back line allow Minteh to exploit space, with few defenders able to match his pace.

Another key aspect of Brighton’s counter-attacking threat is the use of Georginio Rutter to link play with Welbeck. Attacking directly through the centre via Rutter and Welbeck has proven successful in the past and could once again be effective in this match.

Sunderland’s Opportunities on the Counter

Sunderland should have opportunities to counter-attack, as Brighton are expected to dominate possession. At times, Brighton commit numbers forward, leaving only two central defenders at the back, with Kadıoğlu pushing high and Wieffer stepping into midfield. In these moments, fast and direct counter-attacks can pose a serious threat.

Additionally, Brighton look to counter-press aggressively after losing possession. For Sunderland, quickly bypassing this counter-press will be crucial if they are to find success on the break.

Brighton vs Sunderland Prediction

I expect Brighton to dominate possession in this match, with Sunderland looking to maximize their opportunities on the counter and through attacking Brighton’s wide areas. If Sunderland can weather the pressure Brighton apply in their defensive half, they may be able to come away with points – though that is far easier said than done.

Given the number of changes Sunderland will be forced to make, the lack of shared minutes among their players, and the reliance on secondary options, Brighton appear well positioned to bounce back into the win column.

I am backing the Seagulls to win this match at home.

As mentioned previously, Brighton’s ability to maintain possession, press and counter-press effectively, combined with Sunderland’s depleted squad, makes them a strong candidate to take all three points.
