The marquee Premier League match of the week takes place at the Emirates Stadium in North London, where Manchester City will visit Arsenal. Both sides head into this clash on the back of 2-0 victories in the Champions League during midweek. Arsenal traveled to Bilbao and came away with a win over Athletic Club, while on Thursday, Manchester City hosted Italian side Napoli and secured a 2-0 victory after an early red card to the visitors.

Arsenal have been the more successful squad between these two sides in recent history with three wins (one being a Community Shield win on penalties) and two draws with Manchester City failing to win a match in their last five meetings.

Arsenal Team News

Arsenal have taken three wins from their opening four Premier League matches this season. The Gunners will be boosted by the return of Christian Nørgaard to the lineup. William Saliba resumed training in midweek, giving him a chance to feature in Sunday’s match.

Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, and Ben White have not been completely ruled out, but their availability for Sunday remains doubtful. Meanwhile, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus are still sidelined with injuries.

Manchester City Team News

Manchester City have recorded two wins and two losses to start their Premier League campaign. Last weekend, the Sky Blues delivered a dominant 3-0 victory over rivals Manchester United in the derby. They followed that up with a 2-0 win against Napoli in the Champions League on Thursday.

John Stones and Rayan Aït-Nouri are considered unlikely to be available for Sunday’s clash with Arsenal, though neither has been officially ruled out. Omar Marmoush, Rayan Cherki, Mateo Kovačić, and Kalvin Phillips are all sidelined for an extended period and will miss the match.

Predicted Starting Lineups

Arsenal Lineup Notes

Arsenal are dealing with several key injuries. Although William Saliba could return, I have included Mosquera in the starting lineup due to the uncertainty surrounding his availability. In midweek, Eberechi Eze started ahead of Gabriel Martinelli in Bilbao, with the Brazilian making an immediate impact off the bench by scoring just 36 seconds after coming on. For this match, I see Eze retaining his place in the XI. Noni Madueke will likely continue on the right wing in Bukayo Saka’s absence.

Manchester City Lineup Notes

As for Manchester City, I expect their starting lineup to remain unchanged from midweek, given their injury situation. Pep Guardiola was also able to rotate his side in the second half against Napoli after going 2-0 ahead. I predict Khusanov will start at right back, as he offers more defensive stability compared to Matheus Nunes or Rico Lewis. With Arsenal’s strength on the wings, Khusanov should keep his place in the XI. John Stones is still a doubt for Sunday, so I have Joško Gvardiol starting once again.

Match Preview

This is set to be a tightly contested clash between two English giants. Arsenal head into the match in better form than City, but with both sides suffering significant injury setbacks, the battle promises to be finely balanced.

Manchester City could present an asymmetrical setup on Sunday if Pep Guardiola opts for a more cautious approach by starting Khusanov at right back. When Khusanov features on the right side of City’s defense, Bernardo Silva typically takes on more of the attacking responsibility down that flank, allowing Phil Foden to move inside more centrally. On the opposite wing, Rayan Aït-Nouri would normally provide balance by enabling City’s left winger to invert and occupy the half-space. However, with Aït-Nouri sidelined and O’Reilly filling in at left back, City have instead relied on Jérémy Doku staying wide, while O’Reilly steps higher into midfield when in possession. [See image below.] A key battle on that side will likely be Doku versus Jurriën Timber.

Another decisive matchup will be Erling Haaland against Arsenal’s central defenders. In recent seasons, Haaland and Gabriel have been locked in fierce battles, but on this occasion, the striker may look to position himself more against Mosquera (if he starts), rather than going head-to-head with Gabriel. That said, Mosquera has impressed so far filling in for the injured William Saliba.

In possession, Arsenal will look to create overloads on both flanks. On the right, the likes of Noni Madueke, Timber, Martín Zubimendi, and likely Mikel Merino will look to combine against Doku, Tijjani Reijnders, and O’Reilly. On the opposite side, Gabriel Martinelli or Eberechi Eze, Declan Rice, and Riccardo Calafiori will look to push numbers against City’s right flank. Young fullback O’Reilly will face a tough test, as Madueke has been in excellent form and is a direct, aggressive dribbler who could find success in one-on-one situations.

When Arsenal are on the ball, City are expected to drop into a compact mid-block rather than pressing relentlessly. This approach worked well in their recent derby win over Manchester United, where they limited the Red Devils’ chances by holding a disciplined defensive shape.

For Arsenal, Viktor Gyökeres is still adjusting to life at his new club, and the team is learning to adapt to a traditional number nine after years of utilizing a false nine system. At times, Arsenal have struggled to break down defenses with direct passes into a striker, rather than using a false nine to link play and open spaces for midfielders and wingers. Against City, they will hope Gyökeres can use his strength, powerful shot, and clinical finishing to exploit moments when the game becomes stretched. This was where he thrived at Sporting, and Arsenal will look to release him in behind City’s back line during quick transitions.

City, meanwhile, have shown the growing pains of a squad in transition this season. Inconsistency, simple errors, and lapses in concentration have cost them in several matches. Arsenal will need to capitalize on any mistakes the Sky Blues make if they are to take full advantage.

Betting Tips

Pick: Arsenal win

Odds:

  • American: -110
  • Decimal: 1.90
  • Fractional: 9/10

I am predicting an Arsenal win in what should be a tightly contested match. With both sides missing key players, squad depth will play a decisive role, and Arsenal’s depth across all positions is among the strongest in the Premier League this season. I expect the Gunners to create chances on the break and take advantage of any mistakes Manchester City make.

For City, Erling Haaland remains in red-hot form and will look to continue his scoring run, but he could find life difficult against Arsenal’s defense. Unlike their slow, defensive-minded approach against Liverpool at the Emirates before the international break, I expect Arsenal to be more proactive here and look to take the game to City.

Pick: Arsenal win
