Manchester City Team News

Manchester City welcomed back Josko Gvardiol and saw Phil Foden make a start in their 3-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday, with Foden opening the scoring. However, City will be without Omar Marmoush, Rayan Aït-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, and Mateo Kovačić. John Stones will be assessed before kickoff as he manages a minor muscle injury.

Napoli Team News

Romelu Lukaku is sidelined with injury, which means Rasmus Højlund will lead the line for Napoli on Thursday. At the back, centre-half Amir Rrahmani is also unavailable and is likely to be replaced by Sam Beukema in central defense.

Predicted Starting Lineups

Manchester City Lineup Notes

Phil Foden and Joško Gvardiol returned in City’s 3-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday, with Foden netting the opener. Their match fitness remains uncertain after recent injury absences, so Oscar Bobb could resume his role on the right wing in place of Foden, while Abdukodir Khusanov may step back into central defense ahead of Gvardiol. I also expect Matheus Nunes to return to the starting lineup on Thursday.

Napoli Lineup Notes

With Romelu Lukaku sidelined, Rasmus Højlund is expected to lead the line against Manchester City. Sam Beukema will likely step in for the injured Amir Rrahmani at centre-back.

All eyes, however, will be on Kevin De Bruyne as he makes his return to the Etihad Stadium.

Match Preview

Manchester City and Napoli have made very different starts to their respective league campaigns. City have played four Premier League matches, winning two (against Wolves and Manchester United) and losing two (to Tottenham and Brighton). Napoli, meanwhile, have opened their Serie A season with three straight victories over Fiorentina, Cagliari, and Sassuolo.

Napoli’s form has been especially impressive defensively, conceding just one goal in their first three matches — a strike from a Fiorentina corner. They have yet to allow a goal from open play, with their defensive structure proving the foundation of their early success.

In transition, Napoli are highly disciplined. When possession is lost, they allow little time for opponents to counter, with players working at a high intensity to get numbers back behind the ball. City’s front line of Erling Haaland, Jérémy Doku, and Phil Foden (or Oscar Bobb) carries plenty of pace, but they will face heavy pressure from all angles when trying to break forward quickly.

Out of possession, Napoli often crowd central midfield with three, and at times four, players. André-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Stanislav Lobotka anchor the middle, while Scott McTominay tucks inside from the left when required. Napoli’s work rate is clear when attackers such as Rasmus Højlund track back to cover spaces left by midfielders pushing forward.

When countering, Napoli rely on their deep-lying playmakers to progress the ball quickly and release their striker (currently Højlund) into space. That said, chances may be limited against City’s midfield anchor Rodri, and I remain unconvinced by Højlund’s ability to trouble a back line featuring Rúben Dias and Joško Gvardiol.

City will once again look to their wingers to operate in the half-spaces, moving inside to create central overloads. [See image below] Napoli’s defensive rotations will be tested by this approach, forcing midfielders to drop deeper. Both McTominay and Matteo Politano will need to maintain narrower defensive positions to cover these areas, with McTominay already accustomed to doing so.

Manchester City will get opportunities on the counter-attack. As mentioned, Napoli’s players work tirelessly in defensive transition, but their preference for committing numbers forward in attack can leave space between the lines to be exploited. City, with their fast-breaking counter, will need to take advantage and finish their chances.

In possession, Napoli push their central midfielders, Kevin De Bruyne and André-Frank Zambo Anguissa into the final third from deeper positions, trying to lose their markers and create space to receive passes. When Napoli retain the ball, De Bruyne and Anguissa often remain high rather than dropping back quickly, forcing opponents deeper and overloading the defensive line. With so many players committed forward, City will have opportunities to bypass midfield in their build-up and counter directly.

Interestingly, Pep Guardiola’s side placed greater emphasis on regaining their shape and settling into a mid-block rather than always counter-pressing against Manchester United at the weekend. By focusing on defensive transitions and resetting their structure, City were less vulnerable to opposition counters. Instead, their aggressive press was triggered when United moved the ball backward, at which point Haaland and the midfield stepped up to press aggressively.

I expect Manchester City to dominate possession in this match, while Napoli focus on maintaining their disciplined defensive structure. City will be tasked with creating opportunities against a well-organized defensive side. At the other end, Napoli should be able to generate some quality chances through their build-up, with their central midfielders pushing forward and providing creativity – notably Kevin De Bruyne.

De Bruyne’s return to the Etihad promises to be a fascinating subplot and a strong test for both teams.

Betting Tips

Pick 1: Under 3.5 Goals + Erling Haaland (MCI) 1+ Shot on Target (SoT)

Odds:

  • American: -139
  • Decimal: 1.72
  • Fractional: 18/25

I expect this to be a low-scoring affair between these two clubs. Manchester City will likely dominate possession but may struggle to break down a defensively disciplined Napoli side. When Napoli push forward, Rasmus Højlund will likely lead the line. Højlund has yet to prove himself as a clinical finisher, and against a shot-stopper of Gianluigi Donnarumma’s caliber, I expect the Italian goalkeeper to come out on top in key situations.

City appear to be returning to the basics, holding more of the ball but occasionally struggling to convert chances. Erling Haaland, however, is in red-hot form and will make the most of any opportunities that come his way.

Overall, I see this one finishing under 3.5 goals, though Haaland is likely to get his chances.

Pick: Under 3.5 Goals + Erling Haaland (MCI) 1+ Shot on Target (SoT)

*pick is voided if player does not start

Pick 2: Kevin De Bruyne (NAP) 1+ Shots on Target (SoT)

Odds:

  • American: +110
  • Decimal: 2.10
  • Fractional: 11/10

Kevin De Bruyne has started in all three of Napoli’s opening matches this season, already scoring twice. He has three shots on target in as many games, benefiting from Napoli’s style that allows central midfielders to find space between the lines and make runs into the opposition penalty area. There is no doubt De Bruyne will find himself in good positions against City. I am backing him to take his chances, and I believe he will find the target at least once, given his form, importance in attack, and the freedom he has to shoot from promising positions.

Pick: Kevin De Bruyne (NAP) 1+ Shots on Target (SoT)

*pick is voided if player does not start
